Special education is the practice of educating students with an individualized model and creating an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Ideally this involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials. These interventions are designed to help individuals with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and in their community. At our center we follow the approach of Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) wherein we follow the child’s lead and provide a ‘’scaffold’’ for his or her communication and interaction. At New Beginnings we provide special education to children with different disabilities such as Autism, Slow Learner,Down Syndrome, ADHD and developmental delay. Here we accommodate different learning methods based on the child’s needs and capabilities such as the following:
Visual Learning: Visual learners learn the best through graphical ways represented in form of pictures, graphs, charts, images, and diagrams. To teach the child how to spell, we use alphabet flashcards and make the child arrange the word using the flashcard.
Auditory Learning: A child learns through listening such as using musical notes to memorize lists, spell words out loud in different pitches and tones. Singing the ABC song is how many children discover the alphabets. They love to recite it again and again and feel proud once theyare able sing it perfectly. This style will help the child to learn more about language and sharpen listening skills.
Kinesthetic Learning: Here we use body, hands and sense of touch to teach. We use props and model the activity to the child to make the task more interesting and fun. Alphabets are taught through tracing on sand paper with fingers and this method will enable the child to register the letters easily. Variety of materials and textures are used such as clay, wooden tracing boards, rice, beans, finger paints etc. to teach different concepts. Numbers are taught to the child wherein he or she has to form a number in the air using fingers or the whole body.
The science behind the strategies used in Special Education is not rigid or permanent, instead its more flexible and adaptable according to the child’s strengths. We formulate home training program for the child and counsel the parents on how to teach the child in a more naturalistic setting.
